The Details about Dyslexia

The Wilson System
The Wilson Reading System is a program that is built to help dyslexic students gain fundamental literacy skills through structured literacy instruction. Students with reading deficits require systematic and direct (rather that incidental) instruction in phonics (Mathes et al., 2005; Torgesen et al.,2001) and Wilson's program is built specifically to address those needs.

WRS students receive systematic, direct, cumulative and systematic instruction to accelerate their reading proficiency. This specific and scaffolded instruction intentionally and successfully develops student’s:
  • Understanding of the alphabetic Principle Phonemic Awareness (segmentation and manipulation) skills
  • Sound automaticity and blending skills Understanding of total word structure (syllable patterns, morphology, and rules of orthography)
  • Automatic reading and spelling of high frequency words, including irregular words
  • Fluency with connected text
  • Vocabulary
  • Oral expressive language development
  • Comprehension skills
At the completion of the program your student will be able to read grade level text successfully. From there, the most impactful thing is for them to read, read, read!
Dyslexia Defined:
At its simplest, Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that affects someone's ability to read and write. According to the International Dyslexia Association, Dyslexia is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent language recognition and poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language, that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities.
Dyslexia's Impact on Learning
In the classroom, undiagnosed Dyslexia can look like slow labored reading, poor spelling, guessing at words, inattention, and behavior difficulties. Once diagnosed, and with the right support, a dyslexic student can perform as well as any other student. Useful supports and services can include a private tutor, text-to-speech/speech-to-text software, preferential seating, Bookshare, and 504 plans, IEP's etc.

5 Minute Dyslexia Checklist

This checklist (pulled from www.defeat-dyslexia.com in a blog post written by Holly Swinton!) is a list of common symptoms and signs associated with dyslexia, and will hopefully help you get an idea of whether dyslexia is part of your students learning struggles.

Don't expect the answer to every statement to be yes. Every student is different and has different strengths and needs. It's possible your student may have come up with different coping skills and workarounds that can mask dyslexia.

If the answer to 15 or more of these questions is yes, then there could be a good chance your student is dyslexic. If you'd like to have a more personalized assessment of your students reading/writing skills I'd be happy to do a free dyslexia screening.

While these screenings are not equivalent to a diagnosis, they can be used to gain a diagnosis when shared with a psychologist or a diagnostic specialist.
